Judah Maccabee (2c. BCE) Palestinian freedom fighter and member of the priestly family of Hasmoneans. Judah was one of the leaders of the revolt of the MACCABEES against the Seleucid Greek rulers of the Holy Land. He waged a successful guerrilla war against the Seleucid army, using the element of surprise and his knowledge of the physical features of the land. The recapture of Jerusalem by Judah’s fighters and their rededication of the Temple led to the institution of the festival of CHANUKKAH. Judah was killed in battle and was buried in his home village of Modiin in the Galilee.
